Lead Glass

It is used to absorb ionizing radiation, especially in medical environments such as radiology rooms, protecting operators against excessive radiation exposure.

Corning® Med-X® Lead Glass contains lead in its composition, with the aim of blocking radiation from X-ray equipment used in medical procedures and diagnoses. This is glass that fully complies with the NBR IEC 61331-2 standard, which establishes that glass plates for radiological protection must have transparency greater than 80% and contain lead in the proportion of at least 22% of their thickness to protect against undue exposure to ionizing radiation, which is extremely harmful to human health.

Benefits of Lead Glass

  • Ensures the occupational health of professionals, doctors and technicians;
  • Transparency greater than 85%, facilitating operator interaction with the patient;
  • Possibility of lamination, ensuring safety and integrity of the gap in case of incidents, in addition to providing greater product profitability.

Main Applications

  • Displays for radiological protection, X-ray, tomography, mammography and other radiological equipment;
  • Screens for medical diagnostic equipment;
  • Protection for displays in laboratories;
  • Nuclear medicine;
  • Steel industries;
  • X-ray detection screens at airports;
  • Testing laboratories.

Difference between Lead Glass and Multi Crystal

The multi-crystal display or common multi-laminated glass does not contain lead in its composition, which can be seen by its greenish color. Therefore, it is not effective for attenuating radiation according to NBR 61.331.

In addition to being much thicker and heavier, it does not achieve half the attenuation of legitimate lead glass and has less than 50% transparency.
